ORF Guidance and Signage System
Together with MVD Austria and Benedikt Haid, brand unit developed the new signage system for the ORF Zentrum.
»I don’t just want anything new, I want the right thing. The new will be old tomorrow anyway – but our houses may hold up until the day after tomorrow.« That is the mantra of architecture icon Roland Rainer. Rainer is one of the most important Austrian architects of the 20th century. His buildings bear the identity of a modern and democratic Austria, including the ORF Zentrum Küniglberg, which has been a listed as a historic monument since 2007.
Signage systems give visitors orientation and award buildings an identity. In the course of the construction of the new ORF »media campus,« the opportunity arose to conceive a long lasting signage system created as an independent, preferably closed and at the same time flexible system.
Following Roland Rainer’s approach to architecture and taking into account the protection of historical monuments, the new guidance system is based on the basic elements of the original, but develops new elements, shapes and designs and thus adapts to the current needs on site. Nothing (completely) new, but the right thing. A modular system with simple, expandable details.
As part of the guidance system, pictograms serve as individual parts of a signage language for orientation and communication. For this purpose, we developed additional pictograms in order to be able to communicate quickly and clearly.
Reduced forms and colors allow a coherent and, above all, clear appearance. In addition to improving orientation and communication, this should also strengthen the company’s (spatial) identity. Branding as part of the signage system. The signage system as part of the branding. So, everything was done right.
